Jochem Sanders is a photographer based in the Netherlands. He spent five years in New York as director of photography for Ellen von Unwerth, and began American Backgrounds on his return: portraits of passersby, made against a single wall, with the street as his studio. He would wait hours for the right background, then had a minute or two with each person.
The work took him to Pitti Uomo in Florence, where he photographed at the same wall from 2013 to 2016 and was published in Book of Denim.
After that he spent ten years making and designing furniture and interiors. He is now picking up the camera again and is open for commissions.
